Email Marketing: The Effective Guide for Writing Marketing Emails

One of the most underrated aspects to digital marketing is the power to write effective marketing emails. Often, we come across clients that have placed a subscribe to email CTA on their website and they never once sent and email out. There in the database sits often thousands of potential customers desperately waiting for an update. This your one shot to remarket and boost engagement with your brand. In this guide we will guide your through the process of crafting effective marketing emails.

Understanding Your Audience

The first step in writing a marketing email is understanding your audience. You have heard it time and time again, and it will be the first step in all things marketing. Know who they are, what they want, and how your product or service can help them. This understanding will help you create a message that resonates with them and persuades them to take action.

Define a Goal

Before you begin writing, define the goal of your email. Are you trying to introduce a new product, promote a sale, or share valuable content? Your goal will guide the content of your email and help you measure its effectiveness.

The goal should align to a campaign, each campaign should also align to the goal. Otherwise, how will you be able to stay on track and measure the effectiveness of the campaign? If my campaign is for a new product A and I send an email about old product B then I am not meeting my goals of creating awareness of the product.

Example:

Major Campaign: Decrypted Tech SEO Service Gold Package

Objective  1: Introduce the SEO Service on the Website.

Objective  2: Raise Awareness how a content based SEO Strategy works.

Objective  3: Introduce the package to existing customers.

Based on my objectives for my major campaign an email marketing campaign could support my last two objectives. Hell ya! Now to craft a S.M.A.R.T Goal for my email campaign. A Smart Goal is one that measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.

Campaign: SEO Gold Package SEO Done for You Solution

S.M.A.R.T Goal: Remarket the Gold SEO Package to 2000 people over the course of 30 days, resulting in at least a 30 percent conversion rate for existing customers.

Craft a Compelling Subject Line

Your subject line should grab the reader’s attention and compel them to open the email. For example, a subject line such as “Rank Higher, Faster, with Our SEO Gold Package” piques interest and indicates what the email contains.

If you ever run short of Ideas, all the inspiration you need is in your own inbox, I keep an email for all the promotional emails. Occasionally, I write down the ones that catch my attention. Then I ask myself why it caught my attention. When it’s time to craft my own, I refer back to my list of inspiration.

Pro-tip: Keep a list a running list of compelling subject lines.

Use a Personalized Salutation

Start your email with a personalized greeting to make it feel more individualized. Using the recipient’s name is a simple yet effective way to do this. Instead of “Dear Customer,” a more engaging start could be “Hello, [Recipient’s Name]. Simply put, your personas have names why wouldn’t your customers?

Write an Engaging Opening Line

The first line of your email should hook your reader and encourage them to continue reading. For instance, if you’re promoting a new fitness routine, you could start with a statement like “We’ve designed a new 30-minute workout routine that fits into your busy schedule.”

Another Example: Unlock the Gold Standard in SEO with our SEO Gold Package, blending innovative strategies, advanced tools, and personalized support to skyrocket your website’s rankings, visibility, and conversions.

Remember that the average attention span or patience level of your target audience is next to nothing. This is your chance to shine, engage your target audience, and win over a potential customer.  This is your Unique Selling Point (USP) for the email.

Delivery a Clear and Concise Message

The body of your email should clearly convey your message. Use simple language and avoid industry jargon. If you’re introducing a new product, describe its features and benefits in a way that your audience can easily understand. Personalize the content based on the client whenever possible

Use Visuals to Tell The Story

Consider including relevant visuals in your email to enhance your message and make it more engaging. A high-quality image of your new product or an infographic summarizing key points can increase your email’s appeal. For instance, a compelling photo of a person performing your new 30-minute workout can help your audience visualize using your product.

  3. A Treasure Chest or Gold Bars: To symbolize the “gold” standard in your SEO package, an image of a treasure chest or gold bars could be effective. It provides a visual representation of the valuable ‘treasure’ that good SEO can uncover in terms of traffic and sales.

  4. SEO-Related Icons: An image containing a collection of SEO-related icons, such as a magnifying glass (for keyword research), a link symbol (for backlinks), or a podium (for high ranking), can visually communicate the various elements involved in your SEO package.

Final Touches

Before sending out your email, make sure to proofread for any errors and test to ensure all links are working correctly. It’s also beneficial to send a test email to yourself or a colleague to see how it looks in an inbox. This helps you catch any issues before your email goes out to your audience.

Remember, effective email marketing is about providing value to your audience, keeping your message clear and concise, and encouraging them to take action. With these steps, you’ll be well on your way to crafting a successful marketing email.

Analytically Tracking Your Email

After sending your email, monitor key metrics such as open rates, click-through rates, and conversion rates to assess its effectiveness. These insights can help you tweak your strategy for future emails. If your new workout routine email results in high click-through but low conversion rates, you might need to improve the landing page it directs to.

There are several products that can help you with this, most CRMs will be able to provide you a level of analytical detail. Mass mailers like Mailchimp and others can also help you track your success.

Writing a marketing email can seem daunting, but with a clear understanding of your audience, a defined goal, and a focus on delivering clear and engaging content, you’re well on your way to creating an email that resonates with your audience and drives action. Remember to review and adjust your approach based on your results, keeping your email marketing strategy dynamic and responsive to your audience’s needs.
